Remodeling FAQ
Surrey home remodeling questions
Remodel or move, phasing, character homes, strata approvals and budgeting.
Is it better to remodel my Surrey home or move? j
It depends on how much you like the location, how much the house needs, and what moving would cost once you add real estate fees, property transfer tax and moving expenses. If you are happy with the neighbourhood and the lot, remodeling often gets you the home you want without those costs. We can price a remodel so you have a real number to compare.
Should we remodel in phases or all at once? i
Doing it all at once is usually cheaper overall and finishes sooner, because walls are opened once and trades are scheduled together. Phasing spreads the cost and lets you stay in the home, but some work gets repeated. A common middle path is updating wiring, plumbing and structure for the whole house first, then finishing rooms in stages.
What is the difference between remodeling and renovating? i
People use the words interchangeably. Strictly speaking, renovating restores or updates what is there, like new finishes and fixtures, while remodeling changes the structure or layout, such as moving walls or rooms. Most whole-home projects involve both.
Can you keep the original details in our character home? i
In many cases, yes. Original wood floors, trim, doors and built-ins can often be restored and kept, and new work can be detailed to match. Where something has to go for structural or code reasons, we can salvage and reuse materials or source close matches.
What does a strata renovation need before it starts? i
Usually a written approval request with drawings or a description of the work, the contractor's insurance certificate, and a schedule that respects the building's permitted hours and elevator booking rules. Some stratas also require specific flooring underlays or limit plumbing and wall changes. We help prepare the package and follow the building's rules on site.
How should we budget for a whole-home remodel? i
Start with the priorities that matter most, then add systems work the house genuinely needs, such as wiring or plumbing. Set aside a contingency for surprises behind the walls, which are more common in older homes. We give you a line-by-line budget with options, so you can decide where to spend and where to save.
Who manages all the trades during a remodel? i
We do. One project manager schedules and supervises every trade, from demolition and framing to electrical, plumbing, drywall, cabinets and finishing, and is your single point of contact. That coordination is what keeps a multi-room project on track.
How do I start a home remodel with you? i
